Lisa and Raji’s English class:
Students of Grade 11 English class are currently working on a Verbal-Visual Essay, at the conclusion of Shakespeare's play, "Twelfth Night". Student groups used very appealing, insightful and detailed visuals to share their reactions, feelings and thoughts about what they learned and understood in a more personal way.  Quotations from the text and their in-depth analysis was an intellectual delight!

Blendspace is a cool tool to use in the classroom.  This week as I sat down to co-plan my lessons on Fiction Unit for Grade 10 English, I thought of a way where I could collect all the lessons, planned activities and store it a place where my co-teacher and students could get easy access. I feel “Blendspace “ is visually appealing and hence students will enjoy using it. It is a platform where we can collect and share digital resources. Wow! It is the easiest way to blend classroom and digital content. Thanks to Geetha ,our tech guru, Paula, Priya and Widi who shared this idea with me.

From a blog post by Ian Jukes of 21st Century Fluency Project:
“If you're looking for video sites for using in your classroom, look no further than this article for Edudemic by Jeff Dunn. He has compiled a comprehensive list of over 100 of the very best video websites out there, and broken them up into various sections according to different lesson theme preferences. Explore and enjoy!”

Deeper learning requires students to think, question, pursue, and create—to take agency and ownership of their learning. When they do, they acquire deeper understanding and skills, and most important, they become more competent learners in and out of school. They become better prepared to succeed in academics, but also in 21st century careers and in life.

We must teach kids how to learn. We must teach them know-how such as:
  • how the brain works and how we can increase its capabilities,
  • how to manage our learning, including how to set learning goals, self-assess, approach new subjects, manage homework, dive deeper, learn from mistakes and know what to do when things get hard,
  • how to engage in deliberate practice to develop expertise,
  • how to foster innovation and creativity,
  • how to work in teams,
  • how to manage emotions,
  • how to develop willpower,
  • how to develop desirable habits through cues, routines and rewards, and
  • how to combine habits with tools to manage one’s self and one’s learning.
