High School Technology Communication - 10th November 2014

Important Announcements:

Two upcoming exciting events for the students:
  • Zach Whelchel will be visiting our School during the week of 17th to 21st November 2014 and he will be interacting with various groups of students on November 17th and 18th.   He is an iOS App Developer who worked with a few students last year in our School on creating apps for iPads/iOS.  Refer to his website if you need more information: http://www.iosappacademy.org/.  In case if you think your entire class or specific students will be interested in interacting with them, there are three ways of making it happen:
    • if you want to bring in your class, signup here
    • if any of your students are interested, send me an email and I will do the needful to give them the complete experience of coding.
    • if you are interested, let Kevin know about it
  • Hour Of Code from December 8th to 14th, 2014. A committee is looking into the logistics of it.  If you are interested in learning simple programming in a fun way, here are the details: http://hourofcode.com/in/en.  Email me and I will keep posting of you about how it is going to work exactly here in our School.

Personalized Technology Professional Learning:

Thank you for the teachers for giving me time to meet you.  I am sending invites every week to the others. Kindly help me in giving me a time and making me part of your teaching.

Moodle Requirements:

The Moodle Rubric for grade 9 through 12 is here:  MOODLE RUBRIC.  Kindly self assess yourself before our initial meeting schedule.  This will help me address your specific needs to support you in fulfilling this requirement.

Exciting Share from Physics Department
Hear the advantage of ‘Vernier Loggerpro’ on your laptop from Ms. Jayanthi!
Every Physics teacher’s dream would be to have students collect relevant data for mechanical concepts while they are riding on a roller coaster, skating on ice or while swinging on a trapeze!
That’s Physics in action and fun to boot!
How do we bring these feats to the classroom and collect data? The Vernier logger pro software has a video capture facility wherein you may borrow videos/stills from websites or capture your own video and upload. Click on the following link to read more...
I know you do a lot of innovative Technology bits or bytes are happening in your classroom.  Kindly share it with the community through this newsletter.  Create, Experience and Share!

Cool Resource and Tool/s:
exit-44205_640.png5 ways to collect Exit Tickets:
I know many of us use exit ticket to collect feedback from students instead of simply asking students to raise their hands in response to a "did you get it?" type of question, but I like to have better record of responses than just a hand count. Here are some tools that can be used for collecting exit information from students.
  • Google Forms (Most of us use it already)
  • Padlet  - https://padlet.com
  • Socrative - http://beta.socrative.com/
  • Poll Everywhere - http://www.polleverywhere.com/
However, while I was going through http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2014/11/5-ways-to-collect-digital-exit-tickets.html?utm_source=feedblitz&utm_medium=FeedBlitzRss&utm_campaign=freetech4teachers#.VGAk7vSUeVw, I found the fifth one, Plickers (which is originally meant for classrooms which are not 1:1).  It looks really a little complicated.  However, with QR Codes created and scanned through the students’ mobile phones, it might offer a variety.

Handy Random Name Picker - Online Tool to pick names randomly
http://www.classtools.net/random-name-picker/index.php  lets you edit and input your students’ name, spin to pick the names randomly, remove the names picked, embed the application into Moodle.  I used it in my class once and from then, whenever we need to decide the order, the students ask me to use this application.  I have seen them really enjoy.  It is simple, effective, and fun!
